Homework is a great way for you to see how your fabulous first grader is doing with a few foundational skills in first grade. It consists of a packet of language arts and math activities, as well as keeping track of reading. Reading minutes may include reading to self, being read to, reading aloud, reading Word Wizard lists, etc.
Procedure: Starting Monday, September 12, your child will receive his/her first weekly homework packet for the year. This will have a daily page of homework for the week that will alternate between language arts and math. The packet is due on Friday. So, as a routine, homework packets come home on Mondays and are due on the following Fridays.
Reading Logs: As you know, this is a critical year for reading. It is vital for first graders to read at home, with much of this time spent reading aloud. First graders should read at least 20 minutes a day/night at home (outside of school time), at least 5 days a week. Please track your child's reading time on the monthly Reading log that will be sent home each month. The log is due at the end of the month, on the due date that is noted on the reading log.
Additional Homework/Practice: If you would like your child to have additional homework or practice, there are additional resources available to you on our first grade website with online activities and games, printables, the Speller's Choice Menu on the back of the monthly reading log, as well as additional reading, keeping a journal and/or writing letters to friends and family for writing practice, etc. Additional and optional math pages will be sent home with your child, as we use the math book and lessons.
Speller's Choice - See "Spelling" page of this website.
