Welcome to Mrs. Crandall's Class!

Hello! :)

I am so excited that you are in my class! All of the fabulous first graders at Northridge do amazing things. This page is where you can find information and activities that are unique to just our class. This will also be the "hub" for activities and information if any "At Home Learning" days occur due to weather. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time! :)

Word Wizards

Each child in our class receives a bright yellow Word Wizard folder (pictured) with their name on it. This folder has the introduction letter with an overview of the importance of the great and effective reading program, as well as the words and phrases lists that your child is working on. It's a first grade goal for EVERY first grader to become a RED Word Wizard and to be able to read the RED Word Wizard words (on the red page) fluently, meaning they don't take a long pause to read the word or sound it out to read it. It takes practice, both at home and school, but being able to read these foundational words fluently DOES help a reader's overall reading fluency and comprehension. In turn, this builds reading confidence. Hooray!

When a child becomes a RED Word Wizard, then they may also move on to more advanced levels that will also give their reading a beneficial boost! The levels go from red, yellow, blue, green, and purple, to gold.

***Please note that at school, I do NOT time your child with a stop watch as they read these words to me. I want them to feel comfortable and confident in their reading progress - not stressed about a timer. The reading rate is noted in the introduction letter, so that you have an idea of the time associated with "fluency".

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If this folder gets misplaced and can't be found, please let me know so that I can get another one to your child immediately. Thank you so much for your support and effort with this important part of our literacy program.

Homework

Starting Monday, September 12, we will start weekly homework. Each student in my class receives a folder that looks like this. They will bring the folder home every Monday. It will contain:
* Weekly Class Newsletter (This includes the new spelling words for the week and curriculum review)
* Weekly Homework Packet
* Monthly Reading Calendar/Log and Speller's Choice Menu (optional spelling practice activities)
* Occasionally it may also include important school, grade level, and/or class information.
Students should bring their completed homework packet back to school in the folder, every Friday.
